Hello to all, it has been several years since I posted on this forum. In fact it was so long that I had to register again.
I am a long time guitar collector of both acoustic and electric guitars and sometimes buy guitars that are rather obscure. I acquired an acoustic guitar that has the name "Shadow" on the headstock along with the words "Bridge Installed". There are absolutely no other identifying marks anywhere on the guitar; no serial number, no model number, and no country of origin. This is a solid top acoustic guitar and seems to be a quality instrument. Workmanship is nicely done and detail is rather plain. Sound is well balanced and intonation is good.
I have researched the internet for many hours trying to get information on this guitar without much luck. I can find quite a bit of information about electric "Shadow" guitars, but nothing about acoustics. Here is what I have learned; Shadow was one of the first companies to design and sell bridge mounted pickups, and it seems that the Shadow guitars served primarily as a platform for their pickups. Apparently the electric Shadow guitars were made initially in Germany and then later moved to other countries. The little information I can find on their acoustic guitars implies that they contracted with an established acoustic maker to produce guitars. These guitars came with the Shadow name and included a bridge mounted Shadow pickup. Apparently these were to be a demonstration vehicle for their pickups and they had no interest at that time in producing acoustic guitars. Hence I suspect there were limited numbers of the acoustic guitars made.
I can often identify an obscure guitar maker buy studying the headstock shape, and that's what I have tried in this case. The closest shape seems to be on the Takamine GD series acoustic guitars. The basic shape is almost the same with the exception that the Shadow design is a little more pronounced where the headstock curves to a point at the end.
My Google search has found only one listing on the "Ultimate Guitar Forum" where there are photos of the exact same guitar with the OP also asking for information. The answers he received were more joking in nature implying that he should not care who made the guitar. I don't have any photos to post with this question, but there are photos available on the Ultimate Guitar site. A Google search of "Shadow Acoustic guitar bridge installed" will bring up the link to that posting.
My question is this; does anyone have information about who made these acoustic guitars and perhaps what years they were produced. I just looked at the Shadow website, and they now show several acoustic guitars, but I suspect the maker of their current acoustic line is different than the maker of mine since the headstock design is quite a bit different.
Any information you can offer is appreciated.
Thanks, JD
