Title: vintage grestch guitar
Post by: shadowzfall on January 26, 2007, 06:28:26 AM
Hello. My great uncle recently gave me an old Grestch in decent shape.
I don't know that much about Grestch guitars so I am hoping you might
be able to tell me a little more about it such as: when it was made, how
rare or non rare it is and maybe how much it is worth. It is green with
a few minor flaws. The pickgaurd needs refinishing and there are 3 or 4
small paint chips on it, the largest being on the back of the neck. The
model number is 6196 and the serial number is 13218. Any information
you could provide me with would be most helpful. Thank you.

hey,

the 6196 is the Country Club, and was available 1954-81. The green finish is known as Cadillac green, but i'm not sure that it was offered throughout those years

Its hard to date it without seeing a picture, serial numbers don't tell the whole story you see.

Post a pic if you can, or email one to Jules and he'll no doubt oblige

hi shadowzfall, and welcome to the forum,

prices are hard to say; the same guitar can fetch wildly differing prices from week to week on ebay - yours will be worth anythinfrom from $1000-$5000+ depending on age, condition, whether it has a case, originality, repairs and so much more.

Are you selling it or just interested? post some pics if you have them

Hi -
I'm new to this forum, but I just want to say DON'T do any refinishing, this will devalue any vintage guitar, every time. As long as it's nothing serious, "play wear" is generally considered cool. Another word of advice, don't sell it unless you are desperate for cash, it will not be going down in value. Jack White just started playing a (different) Gretsch in the Raconteurs - something like that can do a lot for vintage prices!
You're very lucky.
Simon

Hang on to her.  Never mind dollar value.  There is an adage in the music business which says, " In this llife we all deserve to have one good woman and one good guitar.  I had both.

I have a Gretsch White Falcon(an engagement present from my late-departed wife) and won;'t part with it although offers have been made.

If you really need the money, take it and run, and repent at your leisure, as they say.

Its my opinion that an old beat up Gretsch is better than a new Gretsch or any new Gibson, Fender, etc anyday.
