1972 Gibson showcase brochures
1972 Gibson showcase brochuresIn 1972 Gibson produced a series of 'Guitar of the Month' brochures, each dedicated to one of their high end models, the Les Paul Recording guitar, L5-CES, ES-175D, Super 400-CES, ES-355TD-SV and Byrdland. Each brochure was a single sheet folded into four panels, with details of the instruments themselves, their features, musical purpose, and a little history behind the development of each guitar. Only the Les Paul Recording was a new model; the others were all well established in the Gibson line. 1961 Vox Stroller
1961 Vox Stroller electric guitar The earliest versions of the Vox Stroller were actually copies of an early Japanese electricguitar, the Guyatone (also sold under the brand Antoria) LG50. These Strollers, although short-lived did undergo a few changes before taking on the more familiar Strat influenced style of many mid-sixties UK-built Vox guitars. The biggest difference between early and late LG50-style Strollers (and the two pickup version, the Shadow) was the larger pickup, a shade longer, but noticeably wider used in the very first Vox guitars. Compare this early Vox to a 1963 Stroller with the later V1 pickup. For more information about Vox guitar pickups in general, see the Vox guitar pickups page.

Default Are early 70s 3 bolt Strats vintage - they didn't used to be?

I bought a 1972 Strat Sunburst (rose wood) in 1981 for 175 quid. Back then, the 3 bolt were considered far inferior to the proper 4 bolt Strats of the previous 2 decades. At the time it felt like buying an el cheapo copy instead of the real deal. It plays super great but, surely with it's 3 bolt and some probable Mexican circuit components, this era of the cheaper Strat shouldn't be considered vintage?

Hi sounds like a cool guitar

I don't let such things worry me. If it is an interesting guitar, plays well, and feels comfortable - then i'm happy.

I think generalisations about 'bad' periods of guitar production are often pretty vague... Is it an increase in instances of poor workmanship? lower quality materials and components? unpopular changes in the guitars design? Even just badly set up from the factory? Or all of the above?

There certainly were plenty of great guitars built in the 70s...

So can we see some pics?

I've thought about this a bit...I think there's a lot of 'second best' going on with vintage guitars.

When I first started taking an interest when I started big school in the early 90s, there were pre cbs Fenders, that everyone seemed to lust after, and that was pretty much it. Even the big Headstock late sixties ones were kind of looked down upon.

I was flicking through an old guitar mag from 1992 recently, and found a shop advertising a refinned '62 strat for a grand. Personally, I think that's about right for a couple of bits of wood and some magnets and wire, but now even 'player' examples of such guitars have gone through the roof, I can see why people convince themselves that 'hey, an early seventies strat isn't that bad' and shell out more than they ought to.

So that was kinda long winded, but yeah, actually, I think you're right- generally speaking, seventies Fenders were considered crappy back then, and haven't got any better, it's just that the goalposts have moved!

Super thick poly finishes, the three bolt necks...a brand new Fender off the shelf is undoubtedly a better guitar, BUT... with vintage gear, that's never, ever the point.

It's still a cool guitar, and worth a couple of grand to someone or other out there...

If it feels good and sounds good ... it is good.
