1972 Gibson showcase brochures
1972 Gibson showcase brochuresIn 1972 Gibson produced a series of 'Guitar of the Month' brochures, each dedicated to one of their high end models, the Les Paul Recording guitar, L5-CES, ES-175D, Super 400-CES, ES-355TD-SV and Byrdland. Each brochure was a single sheet folded into four panels, with details of the instruments themselves, their features, musical purpose, and a little history behind the development of each guitar. Only the Les Paul Recording was a new model; the others were all well established in the Gibson line. Follow the link to see scans and further information on these leaflets and other Gibson guitar catalogues from the CMI and Norlin periods.
1961 Vox Stroller
1961 Vox Stroller electric guitar The earliest versions of the Vox Stroller were actually copies of an early Japanese electricguitar, the Guyatone (also sold under the brand Antoria) LG50. These Strollers, although short-lived did undergo a few changes before taking on the more familiar Strat influenced style of many mid-sixties UK-built Vox guitars. The biggest difference between early and late LG50-style Strollers (and the two pickup version, the Shadow) was the larger pickup, a shade longer, but noticeably wider used in the very first Vox guitars. Compare this early Vox to a 1963 Stroller with the later V1 pickup. For more information about Vox guitar pickups in general, see the Vox guitar pickups page.

    Default Real or fake?

A guy here in Serbia wants to trade his Hofner for my custom made strat (not custom shop, it was done buy some guy here in Belgrade).
Now, he isnt telling me much about it, and I need to know if this guitar is real or fake, and how much its worth.. I didnt have any contact with hofners until now, so I need your help!

so, here are the pics (he posted it to a website much like ebay):

to see the other pictures, you can click the thumbnails in the upper right corner.
If you cant see them, please tell me, I'll upload them to imageshack or something like that

the owner stated that its a '60s Hofner Archtop Thinline. Thats all I know about it, I tried searching it on the net, but couldnt find anything that looked exactly like this.

btw, is there anything unusual, or anything that I should know about this guitar if its real? Like some known issues or something like that? And how much is it worth now if it is real?

    Thanks a lot!

I can't tell you if it is definitely real, or a well done copy. The parts all look correct, for example the pickups i've seen on other Hofners, and the knobs, headstock logo. The pickguard looks a bit new though, or maybe not.

I can't see it any any of my Hofner reference material, but they did produce a lot of subtle variations.

Mid 1960s seems correct for those parts. I think those pickups were withdrawn by the late 1960s? Can anyone confirm?

The cherry red guitar is a modified Hofner 4574 [ the pups aren't original].
The other one, I have no idea so I have asked someone who will know

Im really confused about the diamond/dagger symbol and with the bridge on this one.. Im not sure if the guitar is worth any money, and its in another part of the country, so its pretty difficult for me to travel over there just to test it out..

    thanks a lot guys!

Assuming it is a real Hofner, it is still one of their entry level instruments; one pickup, bolt on neck... I would guess that this would sell for maybe £200 in the UK - note the word guess; I can't say for sure, I might even be being optimistic.

In general top of the line Hofners can attract decent money, but the entry level stuff is far less desireable. If in doubt i'd skip it to be honest - unless your strat is a real pile of junk

no, its pretty nice.. emg dg20 electronics, flame maple neck, ash body, staggered fender tuners etc.. its a pretty good guitar, but I rarely play it, and I want guitars that Im inspired with, because Im a studio owner/producer and a guitarist..

ok, thats what I've thought.. thanks a lot guys! Im pretty bummed out now, but Im still happy I didnt drive 300km just to find out that the guitar is crap.. I really liked that its from mid 60s.. that sounded pretty awesome, because I've played some fenders and gretches from 60s and they kick ass!

    thanks again!

After asking around and having another look at Steve Russells site, I reckon the guitar is a 4573 E1. The pickip suggests 1963-65 Value maybe £300 Quite a rare guitar, only 3 others known, and they are all different

The cherry red 4574 at the back would be a much better guitar for a player, the 4573 E1 is a collectors guitar really. In UK the 4574 would make over £450
