View Full Version : how to date a hagstrom

Can you date a hagstrom from the serial number? I read recently that the first two numbers are the year, but this seems wrong to me at least sometimes. Is there a rule governing this? Do new Hagstroms follow the same numbering system?

There are a lot of Hagstrom resources available but I must confess it is difficult to find a statement about dating: see links at the top of this page for more...

http://www.jedistar.com/jedistar_guitar_dating_H_N.htm

Threre is a a statement about goya made hagstrom from 1959-61 on this page:
http://goyaguitars.tripod.com/goya_serial_no.htm

The following site is running a registry so you might be able to match your serial with a time period...or deduce a coding system...

http://perso.orange.fr/hagstrom/redirect/index.html

Let me know if you find a definitive (or orugh will do) statement - I will post it (attributed of course)

good luck

No, Hagstroms can not be dated by the number alone. Hagstrom do publish a serial number book, but (if my memory serves) the money from the sales of the book goes to the Hagstrom workers pension scheme or something - so I think they've asked for it not to be reproduced.... no idea where I read this - might be wrong in the details.......

If you tell me a number I can give you a year

Sorry got not information on the numbering scheme of current Hagstroms

I just wanted to verify the dates of certain guitars i've seen.

For curiosities sake : do the numbers follow any pattern? Is the first one 001?

jules

each number has a three digit batch number from 449 (1958-59) up to 999 (1977) and then starting at 001 again, followed by another 3 digits which number the instruments within the batch

so 670056 will be the 56th instrument from batch 670

Hi

I have an old Hagstrom 6 string H45 or J45 accoustic (not sure which - sorry this is on a bass guitar forum - but its the only one I found where anyone asked a question about s/n and age) that I bought secondhand in 1969 in London, s/n 57563. I have always been curious about the year of manufacture. I see from this forum that there is no easy way to tell the year of manufacture from the s/n. Does anyone please have access to the Hagstrom book that is referred to in this forum, and would you mind terribly if I asked if you would kindly be able to look it up for me. I hope this is not an inapproriate request, I realise that everyone is very busy, but this has been one of my favourite accoustics for almost 40 years, and I would like to know a little more about its origin.

Many thanks

Glenn White

Hi Glenn,

This is a guitar forum too!

Unfortunately the Hagstrom book only gives details for electrics - nothing about acoustics at all i'm afraid

Try emailing someone at this site http://www.albinhagstrom.se/ - you may get your answer there - I hope so

Hey Glenn,

Your guitar is H-45 from the second half of 1964. Bjarton was the company that produced the Hagstrom acoustic line and that is the reason that there are no acoustic serial numbers in the Hagstrom book(Although I would incourage you to pick it up anyway).

I recently purchased a 1965 H-45 on ebay and I am still awaiting it's arrival. I also have a 1966 H-22 and a 1966 H-11. if you check the 66' Hagstrom catalogue on the www.hagstrom.org.uk (http://www.hagstrom.org.uk) site, you will see the 4 Folk guitars listed with pictures:

H-11, H-22, H-45, H-45e(This one has electronics)

2 great sites for you to check out:
http://www.bjarton.com/bjarton.htm (this is were the serial numbers for bjarton made guitars are and also some interesting info)

www.hagstrom.org.uk (http://www.hagstrom.org.uk) (another amazing site for info and pics and stuff)

Hope this helps,
Dave Rose

Found this thread and thought I'd revive it. I just bought a vintage Hagstrom Swede, serial # 873164. Anyone have any idea of when it was built? I don't think the first two numbers represent the year because the vintage Swedes were not assembled after 1983.

any help would be great.

Thanks

Thanks for the reply. So you're saying this could possibly be from '73. Interesting. I'm not exactly sure what you mean by "have to look this up". How, where? I've found some websites (most already listed in earlier postings in this thread) but it's hard to figure out where to go. I've emailed some folks over in Sweden who seem to know much about Hagstrom so hopefully they'll get back to me.

I haven't taken any photos yet. Will do so soon. The shop I bought it at said there was only one previous owner. The guitar definitely has its fair share of dings and scratches and finish issues. But because the neck just plays so nice and the beast (its heavy) sounded so great, I didn't care what it looked like. And how can you resist that cool Hagstom headstock and those awesome tuning keys. The orignial owner replaced the hagstrom bridge pu with a Dimarzio (have no idea what model) but it sounds very sweet. There is also a missing part or two...the string holder cover that I see on most photos of old Swedes is not there and the pu and tone selector switches are missing the plastic caps

I traded in a 2003 Epiphone Dot and $50 for the Swede and couldn't be happier.

The Hagstrom serial numbers are in a little book published in Sweden - they are not online anywhere. I just looked in my copy of the book, and yes, yours is a '73

That sounds like a good trade, by the way. I do hope you can post some pics eventually

I am the original owner of this dandy axe but I don't remember when I purchased it ?...the poor thing has been through hell but plays and sounds excellent! the bridge p\u is a Super D. I wish I had the original tuners I would have put them back on.
The Epiphone is my first guitar, my parents gave it to me for Christmas in 1978 ...that day my clarinet started collecting dust and fading out of memory

I don't know if this might help, but I have a Hagstrom Swede that I bought directly from (Karl) Hagstrom in Alvdalen (sp?), Sweden in 1979 via Jimmy d'Aquisto. They did not have a US distributor at the time. I had an original harp headstock one that had some problems with the neck (obviously wish I had kept it now). The serial number is 53 054025

Ok, after some cleaning, and inspection, the guitar says "custom sweed" at the base of the headstock, as well as TCM:0

The interesting thing is that from my online searches, it looks like a 70's model HII

Any information I can find on this guitar and its history would be awesome.

Hi everyone, so cool this great thread is running!

I recently got a really nice natural 70's Hagstrom Swede by the number 53 905 430. Can someone with "The Book" tell when this was made? I tried to deduce the year by looking at other serial numbers online, and I think it could be something like 74.

As probably all can tell, it sounds just as amazing as it looks.

Thank you Jules. Much appreciated!

I recently found another vintage Swede, but sadly it lacks the serial number since someone has changed the jackplate. Actually I think it is one of the Patch 2000 Swedes, because it has a much larger control cavity that seems original. Also there is a hole (that has been filled in) under the pickguard in the place where there was an on/off switch in the Patch. I tried to look under the neck and inside the cavities to find any traces of the original wiring inside the neck of a patch but I didnt see anything. All the original electronics of the patch seem to have been removed by the previous owner but the normal swede electric parts (well, sadly no original pickups) seem to be in there.

Now, have somebody here had or talked about similar "patchy" swedes?

Hey there. Terrific forum!
I just got a 1978? 79? Viking in Natural bubinga color with the F hole binding and floral inlay at top. SN is 53 024163. Can you help identify!?

Body is in amazing shape with only a few small nicks on the neck. Tuners were replaced with Grovers leaving alot of small holes visible in the back of headstock but I'm ok with that. New volume knobs...not sure about pots yet. Original case.

Now the restore part.....
Guitar played like butter with corroded rusted strings and hadn't been played in 10 years the person said. In tune!? and no fret buzz, neck looks super straight, and needs to be conditioned and light steel wool rubbing.

The bridge is super corroded and needs replacing. The tail piece has one of the parts where the strings attach broke off. I wanted to get a Bigsby on it anyway so that's ok. I can't figure out if the B-3 or B-7 is the correct one to get? Thoughts? Should I use a roller (Loose some tone/sustain but stay in tune more?) or get a TOM one adn use groove grease?

The tone 3 way is frozen after working one movement and the pickup selector needs replacement too. The input jack is messed up but when positioned correctly the pickups sound great! The main question I have is can anyone provide a scematic for the wiring and types of selectors and size of input jack used. Should I re-wire the whole thing? Any kits? I can't wait to start ordering parts and get this baby purring?

Thank you SO much for any info/assistance you privide.

Its a bit worn out and damaged but the sound is fine.
The tuners seems to be swopped with some unoriginal ones made in germany, but i think the guitar is from the 70s sometime and made in sweden. The serial number is 53 932348, can someone help me and find out how much its worth? When its made? And how much the damages decreases the price of it? It is damaged with lots of scrapes and one of the volumebuttons is pushed into it, needs to be renovated but works fine to play, sounds good.

HI!

Can someone help me identify the exact year of my Hagstrom Viking 1N (Scandia)?
Serial # 856166. My research tells me somewhere btwn 72-75

The headstock badge is plain, grover tuners, cherry wood, and the rare bound f-holes.

Also, originally, the emblem on the tailpiece had a royal blue background with silver and red, as opposed to black background with gold and red. Had to re-order one off ebay and got the black/silver/red combo. Anyone need an extra emblem-free tailpiece?!

Hi Shinto - batch 856 consisted of 186 Viking 1N guitars made between 72 and 73 - so yours, being 166 of 186 is more likely to be a '73

very nice indeed. yeah that's from a small batch of 186 Viking V1N guitars produced in 72-73. I like it!

Jules, I hope to god you are still responding to these posts! I recently acquired a Hagstrom II, from my dad, that I have been coveting since I was a child. This forum is about as far as I could get in terms of dating it; and from what I have read, I think I may have an old one. The Serial # is 624063. Can you help me out??
Thanks much.

Hi esmith - do you have any pics? The Hagstrom book says batch 624 is 1000 Hagtrom De Luxe III guitars produced between 1964 and 1965

Jules, thanks for getting back to me. I do have a few pics (not the best quality, apologies)...

So, I have seen one other picture from batch 624, and that was a Deluxe III. However, it was from considerably later in the batch. Would they have Deluxe IIs and IIIs in the same batch? Or is this guitar, perhaps, not legit?
